The Process.

  • The first step of the music therapy process is referral. Referrals for music therapy can be received from other medical providers, education professionals, family members, or from the client themselves. During this step of the process, the music therapist will conduct a brief consultation meeting to explore the individual’s interest in music therapy services, potential goal areas, musical preferences, and cultural considerations related to the therapeutic process.

  • The next step in the process is the assessment. The purpose of the assessment is for the music therapist to identify and understand your strengths and challenges, then determine if music therapy services are appropriate. Assessment strategies might include reviewing documentation from your other providers, interviews with you, family members, other professionals that you work alongside, observations in various settings, such as at school, in home, during other therapy sessions, and through testing music-based experiences. If music therapy services are found to be appropriate for your needs, then we will work together to design an individualized treatment plan.

  • Based on the assessment information, the music therapist and client will design a treatment plan using the best available research, the music therapist’s expertise, and the needs/values of the client. If applicable, the music therapist will consult with other service providers to promote a holistic therapeutic experience. The client and music therapist will schedule a session time and frequency for music therapy services. Therapeutic music experiences facilitated during sessions will include receptive, recreative, improvisational, and compositional methods of music therapy. Read more about these methods.

  • The final (and continuous) step of the music therapy process is evaluation. The music therapist will provide documentation on the treament to monitor progress toward therapeutic goals. The documented information will inform the music therapist if the therapeutic music experiences are effective or need improvements, and guides the music therapist in modifying and adapting the experiences to best support client needs.
